1.) Avatar (2009)On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na'vi. The planet's environment is poisonous, which links the human/Na'vi hybrids with one another to allow free movement of Pandora. Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine is called in to action when his brother died. Sully's brother was suppose to be the original avatar, but after his death Jake Sully took his place. This was because his DNA allowed him to match with his brothers Avatar. Sully falls in love with a native Na'vi, and as his bond grows, he is drawn into the battle of the survival for her world. Avatar was an amazing film. The graphics and what they were able to do definitely placed it ahead of its time. The movie was suspenseful and full of everything you would want to see. 2.) The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)The Wolf of Wall Street is based off of a true story. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character Jordan Belfort. Belfort meets his best friend Donnie Azoff at a restaurant. The two of them created a brokerage firm called Stratton Oakmont. Their goal was to make as much money as possible by ripping off their clients. Belfort and Azoff stole millions. The movie targets the public. It's hard to believe that something this crazy could happen in real life. Not just the millions that they stole, but the amount of drugs they consumed on a daily bases. 3.) American Sniper (2014)American Sniper is definitely one of the best war movies of all time, and my favorite war movie of all time. American Sniper is about a true American hero. Chris Kyle is a U.S. Navy SEAL Sniper, and the most deadly sniper in U.S. history. Kyle serves four tours in Iraq and finds that when he is home he can't leave the war behind. 4.) Miracle (2004)Miracle is a true story about the United States 1980 Olympic Hockey Team. The 1980 Olympics took place in Lake Placid, New York. Herb Brooks who was named the head coach undertook the impossible. Brooks put together an Olympic team based off of only college players and chose the team in only one day of tryouts. After intense training and conditioning for months the U.S. Olympic team pulled off a true underdog story. They beat the Soviet Union 4-3 in a hard fought battle. The thing that makes this an underdog story is the Soviets at the time had not lost a hockey game in over a decade. They dominated all of their opponents, including the NHL All-Stars who they beat 6-0. 5.) Southpaw (2015)In Southpaw Billy Hope is the reigning Middleweight Champion of the World with an undefeated record. He is looked at as the greatest boxer of his generation. However, at a charity event his wife Maureen is shot and dies. Billy undergoes hardship and gets addicted to cocaine, which costs him his daughter who ends up being placed in an all girl children's home. Hope goes through rehab programs and finds a new boxing trainer in hope to return to the ring. Hope's new trainer Tic changes his life and turns him into a completely new person and boxer. In Hope's return fight, he fights Miguel Escobar. Escobar's friend is the guy who was suspected of shooting Hope's wife.

If you know soccer you definitely have heard of the names Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. These two players are the two best of all time and no one else comes even close to touching any of there records or awards won. Watching them is a piece of art, they are what soccer is about and show off the beautiful talent. Cristiano RonaldoCristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5,1985, in Funchal, Portugal. Ronaldo has played for four clubs and is currently on Juventus FC. On October 7, 2002 at just 17 years old, Ronaldo made his first league debut for Sporting CP in the Portuguese league. After that season he was transferred to Manchester United in 2003 for about $22 million. Ronaldo spent 7 years with ManU. At ManU Ronaldo won a total of 19 awards and trophies; including a Ballon D'OR (award for best player in the world that year). After 7 years with ManU, Ronaldo was bought by the biggest club in the world Real Madrid for $106 million. Ronaldo spent 9 years with Real Madrid, where he won a total of 49 awards and trophies. At Real Madrid, Ronaldo won the Ballon D'OR 4 times. After the 2018 season, he requested that he wanted to leave where he was bought by his current club Juventus for $132 million. Ronaldo has not even played a full season at Juventus and he has already won a trophy with the club. Ronaldo has a total of 591 goals in 789 games. At Real Madrid, Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 games. Lionel MessiLionel Andres Messi was born June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. Messi is the fastest developing soccer player in the history of the sport. At the age of 13 Messi joined Barcelona's U14 team (player's under 14 years of age). Messi made spectacular progress at each of the different age levels, climbing through the ranks to Barca C, followed by Barca B and the first team in record time. In the 2003-2004 season, when he was still only 16, Messi made his first team debut in a friendly with Porto that marked the opening of the new Do Dragao stadium. The following championship-winning season, Messi made his first appearance in an official match on October 16, 2004, in Barcelona's derby win against Espanyo. On May 1, 2005, Messi became the youngest player ever to score a league goal for FC Barcelona against Albacete when he was only 17 years, 10 months and 7 days old. At Barcelona, Messi won a total of 55 awards and trophies and has scored 581 goals in 665 appearances. Messi has only played for one team his entire career and that is Barcelona; in interviews, Messi has said that he wants to end his career there. Final ComparisonAfter looking over their careers I believe that Ronaldo is truly the better player. Although it is close, there are just a few things that stick out in Ronaldo's career above Messi. They both have 5 Ballon D'OR awards. However, Ronaldo has won the Ballon D'OR on two different teams and once in the hardest league in the world; the Premier League. The Premier League is the professional soccer league in England and it has the best average talent. Every team is always challenging. The worse team in the league always has the chance to win against the best. Ronaldo has also won more champions league trophies (trophy for best team in the world). Ronaldo and Messi have played each other many times: through the champions league, international football, and La Liga. They both played against each other for years in the La Liga (Spanish Soccer League). Ronaldo is a more dominate force. Ronaldo is stronger, a scoring machine, and has put in more work than Messi. Messi was born with talent; Ronaldo trained for his. Ronaldo shows that if you truly put work into it you can do anything.
Bryce DearbornSports are a huge passion of mine. I have watched and played sports my entire life. A huge debate in the sports world is whether or not female athletes should be paid more. The gap between the average female salary and the average male salary in sports is a pretty big. There are plenty of sports we can look at. However, we are going to focus on basketball. Basketball is a well watched sport in the U.S. and both male and female play it professionally. Last year the average WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) yearly salary was $71,635 and a maximum salary of $113,500 (the conversation.com). While the average NBA (National Basketball Association) yearly salary was $7,379,054 and the maximum salary was $37,457,154 by Stephen Curry (basketball-reference.com). The lowest salary in the NBA is $815,000 which is about 8 times the amount of the highest salary in the WNBA. WNBA players are going on sports and news networks through interviews claiming that they deserve the same pay as NBA players. Do they deserve $200 million contracts? Maybe. Many female players train as hard and harder than some NBA players. However, it comes down to revenue. Last season the NBA made $7.4 billion, while the WNBA only made $25 million (Forbes.com). Out of the money made last season around $3.5 billion from the NBA went to players salaries and out of the $25 million, $11 million went to their players salaries. You cannot pay players with money that you do not have. In the WNBA, how can you give a player a 6 year - $200 million contract when the WNBA barley makes any money. I agree with the salary that WNBA players receive. It is the simple fact that the WNBA does not make enough money to pay their players big bucks. The average attendance for the WNBA was just over 7,000 last year (Forbes) while the average NBA attendance was just over 19,000. The WNBA makes no money from attendance. They do not fill arenas and make no money in jersey sales. The talent in the WNBA is getting better but it is still not completely there. There is a huge gap in talent from the NBA to WNBA. When you watch the Sports Center top 10 replays of the week; for the NBA you'll see alley-oops, insane dunks, and ridiculous layups that seem almost impossible. For a WNBA top 10, you'd might get lucky to see a 360 layup or even just a breakaway layup. I remember watching the 2018 WNBA All-Star game and a player got confused on which way to shoot the ball. How can this happen and how is this acceptable? The All-Star game is suppose to bring in the best players. Players are growing more in college which brings better talent. The WNBA will continue to grow. For now, the salary that the WNBA players receive is fair.
Bryce DearbornEveryone should know the importance of American history, and how our country became the way it is today. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the course of the future forever. Today the third Monday in January, we celebrate a man who stood up in what he believed in. He did not once think about what would happen to himself. He was a man whose fight for equality strengthened our nation. "Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that" - Martin Luther King Jr. MLK had a vision for the future and preached what he dreamt. A future of equality and fair treatment to all. A fight for social justice. MLK was against violence and wanted peace to come between all. MLK stood up just like many other brave figures of his time during the Civil Rights Movement. MLK lead an amazing life. He was the driving force of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 march on Washington. On August 28,1963, MLK read his famous speech know as "I had a dream" in-front of 300,000 in Washington D.C. This speech really changed the future of America and how people view one another. His speech is over 50 years old and is still talked about to this day. In 1964, a year after his speech, MLK was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his dynamic leadership of the Civil Rights movement and commitment to achieving racial justice. Martin Luther King Jr. is a true American hero, and is someone who will be known forever. "I have a dream that one day down in Alabama — with its vicious racists, with its Governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification — one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." - Martin Luther King Jr. Links:

The other day I came across this fascinating Ted Talk video about whether or not you could survive a nuclear fallout by Brooke Buddemeier. I have always been interested about this topic, because believing that you could survive something so dangerous and powerful seems almost unrealistic. The fact that there is something you can do to survive a nuclear fallout is pretty amazing, due to the fact the a nuclear bomb almost destroys and disintegrates everything in its path. The power that makes up a nuclear weapon is nuclear fission. Nuclear fission is where an atom's nucleus is split in two. This process is creates the energy that causes the explosion. The important take away from this video is that if you are in the rage of the ball of fire (where a nuclear weapon hits), sadly there is almost nothing that you can do. It's what you can do if you are in the radius of the shock wave. During a nuclear detonation, the safest place to be is inside; if you have a basement you should go down there. The worse part about a nuclear bomb is the aftermath of all the harmful particles it creates and leaves behind. After a nuclear detonation there is a large shockwave and an immense amount of heat and flying objects that shoot around. Once the fireball starts too cool, the debris and dirt particles that were carried into the air mix with the nuclear fission. This creates radioactive particles called FALLOUT. Fallout can be carried miles across land and is extremely dangerous. After a day Fallout loses 80% of its energy. All of this information is extremely important to know, because with the improvement of weapon technology and the tensions between other nations you never know when the next nuclear attack could take place. |
